The 2011 Infiniti M37 and Infiniti M56, revealed at a press function in Beverly Hills, will add considerable power, technology and style without a commensurate increase in weight.

Just half an inch longer than the outgoing model, the 2011 Infiniti M looks better because it is lower, two inches wider, and the roofline flows into a brief decklid with curved upper lip. Jaguar’s XF profile comes to mind. However, the M’s compact nose with sloping hood and mild fender bulges mixes Infiniti FX elements with wheel arches like Mazda and Mercedes sedans. The unique point is the door treatment with parallel rails running along the bottom Infiniti dubs wave-style, and in Infiniti fashion the car is aero sleek (cD of 0.27) and has zero lift for high-speed stability.

Beneath the hood are two new engine choices both connected to a seven-speed automatic. The new M37 gets a new 3.7-liter V6 rated at 330 horsepower, while the new M56 features a direct-injected 5.6-liter V8 sporting 420 hp, nearly 100 more than the old M45. The M37 and M56 are rear-wheel-drive cars.

All-wheel drive comes on the M37x and M56x. The system splits power between the front and rear wheels. The torque split varies from 50/50 to 100 percent to the rear wheels, depending on conditions.

A Sport package is available for the rear-wheel-drive models featuring a unique front bumper, dark trim, larger brakes, active rear steering, 20-inch wheels, sport seats, magnesium shift paddles.

The suspension architecture for the new M is similar to that of the previous generation, though recalibrated to provide a better ride without sacrificing the precision or grip that made the Infiniti M a viable alternative to the BMW 5 Series. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard, as are numerous electronic stability and safety aids.

Good finish and interesting materials characterize the cabin, including an ash wood grain oriented opposite the norm and a textured aluminum trim. Two types of leather and headliner trim are available. Touring models have quilted, piped upholstery. A 7-inch screen features controls at a 45-degree angle for easier operation. Two new features are added for 2011: active noise cancellation in the sound system and a feature called Forest Air, designed to make a better cabin environment.

Standard features will include leather, backup camera, moonroof, bi-Xenon headlights, power-folding heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control, Bluetooth, USB input, intelligent key, and driver memory (including audio and climate control settings). Options include adaptive headlamps and two audio system upgrades (top is 5.1-channel, 16-speaker surround with in-seat speakers framing each front headrest), and heated wheel and climate-controlled seats standard on M56 and M56x.

Joining Infiniti’s lane departure warning system is a prevention system that uses individual brakes to urge the car back in its lane. A similar intervention has been added to the blind spot warning system. Collision warning with interlinked braking is also available.

A new M35 Hybrid is expect to debut in early 2011.

By Barbara Polichetti – Journal Staff Writer

WARWICK — Drivers may have noticed that the gargantuan American flag that long flew over the Herb Chambers Cadillac dealership off Route 95 in Providence is no longer there.

That’s because the dealership itself has moved –– to the suburbs.

Shortly after the first of the year, Chambers moved its Escalades and other vehicles to 1151 Bald Hill Rd., in Warwick, the site of Chambers’ Saturn business until General Motors pulled the plug on that line.

The move is being applauded by city officials who said they enjoyed a good relationship with Chambers and wanted to keep the jobs and the taxes in the city. Mayor Scott Avedisian and City Councilman Raymond Gallucci both worked to encourage the move to Warwick, which will involve a total overhaul of the site to bring it in line with Cadillac design specifications for its dealers.

The move is important, Avedisian said, because it not only prevents a fallow spot from cropping up on Route 2 (which is called Bald Hill Road in Warwick), but it also brings in property taxes and considerable inventory taxes because of the cars that Chambers will keep on the lot.

For decades, the Chambers Cadillac dealership was located on the fringe of Route 95 south, off Elmwood Avenue in Providence.

Unfortunately, Warwick’s gain is a loss for neighboring West Warwick, where Chambers had been considering opening up a dealership for the past couple of years. The West Warwick location, also on Route 2, which is known as Quaker Lane in that town, is little more than one mile south of the Warwick spot.

“The mayor and Councilman Gallucci definitely worked to make it clear that they wanted the dealership in Warwick,” said K. Joseph Shekarchi, lawyer for the dealership. “And we had a good history with the city.”

Herb Chambers, who owns 47 car dealerships in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, said that Warwick’s courting was a factor, but the move to Route 2 was also a good business decision. Not only can he make use of some of the existing Saturn facilities, but he can also take advantage of the heavy traffic that travels the retail strip daily.

“At our old location, we were more of a destination stop,” Chambers said Tuesday. “Now, we’re really in a retail mecca, and it presents us with a world of opportunity.” He estimated that sales are up 30 percent to 40 percent since the move to Warwick.

“We also want to make sure that people know that they can still get their Saturns serviced at the same spot and they’ll see many of the same folks,” he said.

Chambers said that the West Warwick land is for sale. According to town records, Chambers owns nearly 3.4 acres at 561 Quaker Lane, just north of the Quaker Valley Mall shopping center.

As for the 50-by-30-foot flag that flapped above the old dealership, Chambers, who prominently displays American flags at all his businesses, said it will appear over Route 2 if he is able to secure the proper pole and comply with city zoning requirements.

That makes this the second generation of this crossover SUV. Though sized more like a midsize SUV, the Equinox has pricing and features of a compact SUV, though now with some luxury and technology amenities not expected in its price class.

The redesigned Equinox is about the same size as the outgoing model. But it has different styling inside and out and two new engine choices. The base engine is an upgraded version of the 2.4-liter four-cylinder that powered the last model. Thanks to direct injection, it now has more power and gets class-leading fuel economy of 32 mpg on the highway. Lots of sound insulation makes it quieter than most four-cylinders, too.

Equinox is also offered with a 3.0-liter V6 that replaces a 3.6-liter V6. It has similar power numbers at 264 horsepower, but it feels much less powerful than the larger V6 it replaces. In fact, we don’t think it feels much more powerful than the capable four-cylinder, so we think the base engine is the best choice.

The new Equinox handles better than its predecessor. It is more carlike than the pre-2010 models, with less lean in turns. It’s not sporty, but it’s on par with its main competitors. The ride is also quite good. We found that with either the standard 17- or available 18-inch wheels, the Equinox absorbs even sharp bumps without disrupting passenger comfort.

Inside, the Equinox has an attractively designed interior. There are some nice amenities, including ice blue ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, a hard-drive audio system, a dual-screen rear DVD entertainment system, and a power rear liftgate.

The Equinox offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, and they have 10 inches of travel, so drivers of all sizes with fit. The useful MultiFlex rear seat carries over. It offers eight inches of travel, so tall passengers can ride in back or the driver can push the rear seat forward to carry more cargo.

Its roomy cabin and reasonable pricing make the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox attractive, and buyers can get some nice amenities they wouldn’t expect in this price range. While the last model’s handling was too sloppy for many, that problem has been remedied, making the Equinox a player in the entry crossover SUV market.

The 2010 Chevy Equinox is offered in LS, 1LT, 2LT and LTZ trim levels, each with front-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). All models come standard with GM’s Ecotec four-cylinder engine, now with direct injection technology that improves horsepower from 164 to 182 and torque from 160 to 172 pound-feet. Fuel economy is also improved, as GM says the 2.4-liter four cylinder with achieve 22/32 mpg (city/hwy) with 2WD and 20/29 with AWD. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with an Eco feature that alters the shift points to increase fuel economy by about 1 mpg.

Also offered is a 3.0-liter V6. A derivative of GM’s 3.6-liter V6, this engine delivers 264 horsepower and 222 pound-feet of torque. GM quotes fuel economy estimates of 18/25 mpg with front-wheel drive and 17/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. The V6 also comes with a six-speed automatic transmission, but it adds a manual shiftgate.

The Equinox uses a longer version of the Theta architecture that underpins the Saturn Vue, but the new model is about that same size as the old one. Theta is updated from the first-generation Equinox, and that’s a good thing because the outgoing model didn’t handle very well.

Up front, the Equinox features Chevrolet’s now-signature two-tier grille with gold bowtie insignia. The headlights wrap around the front fenders. Air ducts sit below the headlights and, in models so equipped, they house fog lights in chromed bezels that bisect the openings. The lower front fascia is charcoal-colored plastic and it has an air damn in the center. The LTZ model and the 2LT with the Chrome Appearance Package add metallic trim pieces to the lower portion of the air damn opening. The hood has three character lines and is shorter than the last one because Chevrolet moved the base of the windshield forward three inches, creating a more slippery shape. The new Equinox has a 0.36 coefficient of drag versus the 0.42 CD of the outgoing model.

Around the sides, the Equinox has pronounced fender flares and a wheels-at-the-corners stance, especially up front. The roof features wraparound side glass at the rear and tinted rear and rear side windows. All but the LS model has luggage side rails; they’re charcoal on LT models and they add chrome inserts on the LTZ and the 2LT with the Chrome Appearance Package. That package also adds chrome door handles and side mirrors. Seventeen-inch aluminum wheels are standard and 18- and 19-inch wheels are available.

At the rear, the Equinox has dual round taillights, a takeoff of the Malibu design, and a roof spoiler. The tailgate opens upward, and a class-exclusive power, programmable tailgate is offered. Owners can program the tailgate to open to different heights so shorter drivers can reach it. Overall, the look is attractive. The LTZ’s additional chrome trim adds a touch of class, especially with the chromed 19-inch wheels.

Interior Features

Chevrolet says the Equinox’s interior is inspired by the interior of the successful Malibu midsize sedan. Elements of the Malibu’s attractive double-cockpit design are there, but we’d like to see more soft-touch surfaces, tighter gaps and some wood, aluminum or chrome trim.

There are, however, some nice touches. The available ice blue ambient lighting is a delightful feature. It’s standard on all models, but you get more as you go up the range. LS models have it on the center stack surround and in the center console cupholders. LTs add it on the instrument panel and center console, and the LTZ also gets it in the door handle recesses, in the footwells and in the doors’ map pockets. The Equinox also offers some other amenities not expected in the class, including dual-zone automatic climate control, a hard-drive audio system and a dual-screen rear DVD entertainment system.

The instrument panel is attractive. The speedometer and tachometer feature white numbers and black backgrounds. They are set in large pods and in between are water temperature and fuel gauges, as well as a digital trip computer readout. The base interior has a storage cubby at the top of the center stack. When the navigation system is ordered, it sits in this spot. The controls on the center stack are grouped in a tight bunch, with the radio buttons up top and the climate controls at the bottom. With the navigation system, there are 43 buttons, dials and knobs. It’s a bit less confusing without the navigation system, but it’s going to take some getting used to. All of the controls are easy to reach, and the area is trimmed in a good-looking clear-coated silver-painted plastic.

Space is not a problem in the Equinox. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. GM obviously spent some money here. They are especially attractive in leather, with their two-tone coloring and contrast stitching. The front seats have 10 inches of travel and the steering wheel tilts and telescopes, so everyone from the very short to the very tall will be comfortable. The rear seat continues with the useful MultiFlex system, which includes a reclining feature and eight inches of travel fore and aft. With the rear seat all the way back, a tall rider can fit behind a tall driver. When the rear seat is pushed fully forward, rear cargo capacity is 31.4 cubic feet. The rear seat is also split 60/40 and it folds to open up a total of 63.7 cubic feet of cargo space. The load floor is fairly flat.

Driving Impressions

Anyone who avoided the first-generation Equinox due to its cumbersome handling characteristics no longer has to worry about that problem. The Equinox is now more carlike. The copious body lean is gone and passengers can ride in comfort without their heads being tossed side to side with every flick of the steering wheel. The steering is light and somewhat numb, and the brakes are easy to modulate. The new Equinox is every bit as good as its competition in terms of handling.

It rides well, too. With the standard 17-inch wheels, the Equinox absorbs even sharp bumps without disrupting passenger comfort. The available 18-inch wheels also provided a comfortable ride on rough Southeast Michigan streets.

The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is upgraded this year with the addition of direct fuel injection, which improves both power and fuel economy. It provides usable power from a stop and on the highway, and it even offers decent passing punch. Chevrolet quotes a 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds for a front-wheel drive model, which is pretty quick for a four-cylinder-powered vehicle of this size.

Fuel economy for the 2.4-liter four-cylinder is an EPA-rated 22/32 mpg City/Highway on an Equinox with front-wheel drive. That’s class-leading fuel economy. Not even smaller suv’s can match the Equinox’s 32 mpg Highway figure. And thanks to plenty of sound-deadening material and acoustic glass in the windshield and front windows, the 2.4-liter is smoother and quieter than most four-cylinder engines.

For 2010, Chevrolet switched from a 3.6-liter V6 to a 3.0-liter V6 as the top engine in the Equinox. While the horsepower rating is the same at 264 horses, the 3.0 has 28 less pound-feet of torque and, on the road, it feels considerably less powerful. (We didn’t have EPA fuel economy ratings for the new 3.0-liter V6 at press time; the previous 3.6-liter V6 engine was rated 16/24 mpg, while the previous 3.4-liter V6 was rated 17/24 mpg.) We found the new 3.0-liter V6 doesn’t feel that much stronger than the standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. Chevy says a front-drive Equinox with the V6 can accelerate to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. That’s less than a second faster than the four-cylinder, and the V6 costs more while getting worse fuel economy.

In short, we recommend the four-cylinder models as being a better value.

Steve DeFillippo, Proprietor Davio’s Restaurants: Boston, Foxborough & Philadelphia and Avila Mediterranean Restaurant of Boston

In the early 90’s as his restaurant business grew, Steve favored the rugged build, drivability and luxury of a Mercedes-Benz SUV to tackle his challenging morning and late evening all-weather commutes between his suburban home and Boston restaurants. In search of his new ride, Steve made his first visit to Herb Chambers Flagship Motorcars of Lynnfield. The visit not only changed his idea of the “usual spotty and unenthusiastic dealership customer service” he’d experienced when shopping for past vehicles– but firmly planted the Chambers royal treatment in his car shopping “win column” ever since!

“As soon as I walked in, they treated me like the king of the world…not only was the sales experience great, the dealership was unlike any I’d ever been in! It was beautiful, clean and welcoming… for me that really registered”.

Noted Steve, ”I mean Herb was just so far ahead of the game, even back in the 90’s! As soon as I walked in, they treated me like the king of the world…not only was the sales experience great, the dealership was unlike any I’d ever been in! It was beautiful, clean and welcoming…for me that really registered.”

Steve’s latest experience was a real eye opener…as he relates another story of unparalleled customer service. “Recently, I was in a small ‘fender-bender’ accident in Boston and had called the dealership but my schedule did not allow me to get the car to the dealership for repair. A day or so after my call, I was greeted at the restaurant by a flat-bed truck for my damaged car and a Mercedes-Benz loaner car for temporary use while my car was fixed! This was unbelievable…I mean who does this! These experiences are precisely the reason why I have happily referred at least 100 or more friends, family and employees to The Chambers Companies for all kinds of vehicles over the years.”

Just last week, I personally took a friend visiting from Rhode Island to Chambers Motorcars of Boston — she immediately learned why it was worth the trip. Not only did she get a great deal on her new car, but in describing their service program – they offered to regularly drive to her Cranston, RI home… pick-up the car… leave a loaner and deliver her car freshly washed and serviced… She was just bowled over!”

As a long-time resident of Lynnfield, MA Billy Costa was very aware of Herb Chamber’s stellar reputation as a leading new vehicle dealer—so when ‘new car’ time came, he shopped at Herb Chambers. Of his car shopping experience Billy comments, “It was an amazing experience…the idea of being involved in any type of hassle whatsoever went right away…Herb’s people really get customer service and know how to make you feel special!” Ever since then, when any of his friends or family ask him where the best place to shop for a new vehicle might be (having introduced well over 50 happy customers to many dealerships) …there was never a question…it was always Herb Chambers!

Billy’s favorite ride happens to be his present Mercedes-Benz GL 320 SUV with its Bluetec diesel engine. “…The car hums, it’s very powerful and quiet and because of the amazing diesel engine technology, I get twice the miles per gallon than I did in my old SUV! I’m just so impressed with Chambers’ service; I had a small electrical problem with my vehicle the other day and called the dealership. Not a half-hour later, they showed up with a flatbed truck and loaner car to use, while my SUV was being fixed. This is true ‘Beverly Hills’ service…my car comes back fixed, washed and cleaned inside …Herb Chambers understands that busy business people just can’t ‘drop everything’ and make time to service their car, it’s wonderful!”

Al Melanson, frequent Herb Chambers Client and advocate

Like many of his generation, Al Melanson believed that purchasing a car was at best ‘a thankless chore and an exercise in futility’ in which the dealer ultimately prevailed. In 2001, after tirelessly shopping several local dealerships for a Mercedes-Benz SUV, Al visited Herb Chambers and was ‘won over’ by “the simply royal treatment, great deal and a fantastic overall purchase experience.”

An informed shopper and staunch believer in the saying, “A deal isn’t a good deal, unless both parties walk away satisfied”; Al readily acknowledges this level of satisfaction with every one of his own and extended family’s multiple Herb Chambers vehicle purchases (they’ve included: multiple Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet and Hummer purchases). What’s more, personal experiences with several Herb Chambers Sales & Leasing consultants in several stores, (of which he now counts as near members of his family), have led Al to refer well over 200 additional friends and associates to Herb Chambers!

Warwick will soon be home to the only Cadillac dealership in the state when Herb Chambers Cadillac, formerly located in Providence, moves into what was the Saturn dealership on 1511 Bald Hill Road.

Earlier this year, General Motors announced it would eliminate the Saturn brand of cars by 2011. Saturn, which had never been profitable in its 20-year history, was eliminated as part of GM’s restructuring plan submitted to Congress and President Obama after having received bailout funds.

Herb Chambers, which owns the dealership, was considering building a state-of-the-art two-story dealership in West Warwick, just a mile or so up the street. Herb Chambers, however, was convinced by Mayor Scott Avedisian and Warwick attorney Joe Shekarchi (who does legal work for the company) to remain in the city. That means the city will retain the tax revenue that otherwise would have been lost had the dealership opted to move.

Contacted yesterday, Chambers said he was happy to retain a presence in Warwick.

“General Motors has been pressuring me to move (Cadillac) there for a long time. Finally, we’re able to do it,” said Chambers.

Chambers pointed out that while the dealership will sell Cadillac exclusively, people who own Saturns will still be able to have their cars serviced at that dealership.

“We will continue to service Saturns forever, basically until there aren’t any more of them on the road,” said Chambers.

Chambers said the consolidation of two dealerships (Saturn and Cadillac) into one would result in some job losses, but he hopes that increased Cadillac sales will result in future job gains.

“We expect an increase in Cadillac sales because of our new location. Hopefully we’ll be able to add more employees in the near future,” said Chambers.

Chambers said Warwick is a great place to do business.

“There is so much retail in Warwick. That strip on Route 2 has to be one of the busiest in New England,” said Chambers.

Avedisian said that the addition of Herb Chambers Cadillac represents a much-needed end-of-the-year boost in economic development.

“Herb Chambers Cadillac is a wonderful addition to the city. We had many discussions about getting them here, as they are a well-known and respected entity in Rhode Island. We are pleased they will call Warwick home,” said Avedisian.

“This is a great end-of-the-year economic boost for the city.”

Councilman Steve Merolla (Ward-9), contacted on Friday, said he too welcomes the dealership into the city.

Yet the new 2010 Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h seems uncommonly easy to operate. And they are brimming with new technology. If the RX were a computer, and in more ways than ever it is, it would have a plug-and-play operating system and an inviting, engaging user interface.

When driven back-to-back against the previous model it’s clear the new 2010 RX offers more than cosmetic improvements. Mechanical improvements for the all-new Lexus RX include an independent rear suspension, a 10-airbag safety system, a six-speed sequential transmission, and an improved all-wheel-drive system. Upgraded accommodations include better seats, integrated satellite radio, acoustic glass, automatic high beam control, and a heads-up display among other things. Many of the improvements are due to more and better computer logic for integrated control of driving systems such as the transmission, all-wheel-drive, navigation, steering and brakes. Perhaps the key interior upgrade is the introduction of a mouse-like controller which Lexus calls Remote touch. It’s used instead of a touch screen to operate climate, audio and the navigation system.

Compared to competing SUVs the RX 350 gets better mileage and cleaner emissions ratings. The RX 450h hybrid gets better mileage yet, and is among the cleanest vehicles yet devised by man.

The RX 350 and RX 450h are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive system is completely new, lighter and more efficient. It works electronically without the locking center differential in previous models.

The RX 350 comes with a 3.5-liter V6 mated to a six-speed automatic multi-mode transmission. Compared to the current model, the RX 350 is a little heavier due to stouter rear suspension components, which provide upgraded crash performance.

As in the previous generation, the grille is placed lower than the headlights, so the Lexus family resemblance carries on, but the headlights are more sharply defined and the roofline is flatter. In essence, the rounded egg-shaped body has been redefined at the corners to retain fluid RX cues in an updated format.

In the process, the new RX got slipperier, with a coefficient of drag, 0.33, down from 0.35.

The RX has a new keyless entry system that has a better-integrated sensor on the front doors. It looks sleeker, and the door handles themselves have been redesigned for a more comfortable grip. Fog lamps are integrated into the front bumper, and the outside mirrors are heated.

It’s strangely exciting to sit in the cockpit of the new Lexus RX 350 and RX 450h. There is a sensation of having so much to do, just like configuring a new computer. There are seating adjustments to lock in, preferences for the Remote Touch controller, operating modes to select and dashboard combinations to try out. We have a feeling an RX owner would be surprised to discover new features after months of ownership.

The RX comes to life with the push of a button. The instruments are bright and engaging, and shaded from outside light. The seats now have slightly higher side bolsters for support during cornering, but they’re still easy to get into. They feel firm at first, but medium-soft once you settle in, and are easily adjusted to a variety of positions. Mood lighting in the footwells and cabin supports a sense of quality and well-being.

The new cockpit provides a step up in sophistication, conveyed in part by a gifted design scheme that includes no straight lines or sharp corners. Every element of the interior is curved, arched or rounded in some way, so lines blend with subtle grace and harmony. California Walnut wood trim accents are mixed with three different interior color combinations, complementing black, light gray, and parchment tones.

The cockpit is divided into two separate zones. The first is for information functions, located higher up where they are easy to see. The second is for control functions, located lower and within easy reach of both front seat occupants. This division is made possible by Remote Touch.

The Remote Touch system is essentially a computer mouse. It’s located exactly where your hand would fall if your elbow were resting on the center console. This mouse will be immediately familiar to anyone who has used a computer. It replaces the need to reach out and touch the screen to use the Navigation system, or adjust audio or climate settings. We found it was simple to use while driving. It allowed us to avoid focusing on the navi screen to tune the climate control or turn down the volume. Plus, no more fingerprints on the screen.

The center console is bridge-like with open storage under the center. The shifter is immediately above the Remote Touch mouse.

There are a number of redundant hard buttons on the steering wheel, and at various points on the dash, 52 in all, but the Remote Touch mouse really does reduce the need to use them. Like a computer mouse, Remote Touch can be adjusted for sensitivity to your preference.

The navigation system is a sixth-generation version, with casual speech voice recognition capability for hands-free operation of audio, climate, and Bluetooth. The system runs from a hard disc, not a DVD, so it’s faster and allegedly smarter than the previous system. Among the improvements are easier phonebook transfer, voice command access to the phonebook, and smart auto-fill when selecting destinations.

XM satellite capability is built in, and the first three months are free when you buy the RX. Three services are available: real-time traffic, advance weather forecasts and XM Satellite Radio. It costs $23.99 a month to subscribe to all three services after the trial period.

The standard audio system has 9 speakers, a 6-disc CD changer and can play MP3 and WMA files from your iPod. A 12-speaker system comes with the navigation system, and a 15-speaker Mark Levinson Surround Sound system is available for those who require an audio system consistent with the very best home systems.

The front seats now have longer cushions, with higher backrests, and are fitted with active headrests as standard equipment. The headrests are designed to adjust upward in the event of a rear-end collision, reducing whiplash. Because of the active headrests, rear-seat entertainment screens are independently mounted in pods behind the headrests. The two seven-inch LCD screens can operate separately so one passenger can play a game while another passenger watches a DVD. The seats are covered in fabric in standard trim, with leather and semi-aniline leather offered as available options.

One of our test units had seats covered in the consistently flawless semi-aniline leather, and we were hard pressed to find a misplaced stitch or shadow of stain anywhere. In fact, the leather is so supple and uniformly perfect we first thought it must be synthetic material. Regardless of the covering, both front seats are 10-way adjustable, with memory, and heated/air conditioned seats are available.

The rear seat can accommodate five and has a 40/20/40 fold-down split. The new design makes it easier to release one or both seats from the back, without having to walk around to the side, when loading cargo.

The rear seats also have a fold-down center console with a covered wood grain cupholder and separate covered storage compartment. The rear seats are shorter, with less reclinability than the front seats, but with good legroom for average-size adults like ourselves, much better than a seat on a 757 these days. There are four grab handles, one for each door. There are two rear air conditioning vents to cool the rear compartment.

Cargo room behind the rear seats has been slightly increased to 40 cubic feet, enough for four average golf bags.

When it comes to the interior, the hybrid 450h is essentially the same as the 350, except that the 450h has an Eco driving indicator that displays fuel economy using a bar graph. A hybrid system indicator replaces the tachometer to provide driving feedback.

Driving Impressions

Over the period of two days in Sonoma, California, we had the opportunity to switch in and out of standard a RX 350, both with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, plus an RX 450h hybrid, and a brief drive in the current RX 330. We spent most of our time in a Matador Red RX 350 AWD with the Navigation package.

Out on the road, the big V6 in the RX 350 responds well to throttle. Part of that is the new six-speed transmission, which has a lower first-gear ratio than the old five-speed, so it gets the RX quickly up to speed for merging or highway entry. Lexus told us to expect 0-60 times in the neighborhood of 7.4 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 15.8, and that’s about the way it felt. We didn’t go there, but top speed is electronically limited to 112 mph.

The transmission quickly selects gears based on throttle input, so you can ask for a gentle downshift just by giving it a little more gas. If you floor the accelerator, it kicks down two gears and moves out. It’s also possible to select your own gears in multi-mode shifting, but the automatic’s logic seemed so intuitive that we would probably drive in Auto 95 percent of the time, using the manual mode for downhill control on the highway or long uphill when heavily loaded. There is no V8 option for the RX, but if there were, we’d wager that performance would not be much improved, and mileage would suffer.

We did not feel much torque steer in the front-wheel-drive models, and particularly, the hybrid. Full-throttle starts in the previous hybrid elicited a waggle as various components of the powertrain kicked in that we found disconcerting. First, you’d feel the engine, then two electric motors, one after the other. These steering affectations are far better tamed in the new RX 450h. Our assumption is that the transmission’s computer is managing torque more progressively, and the flywheel is more heavily damped.

The RX 350 is not built for road racing, but more for passenger comfort. The new rear suspension, a double-wishbone independent, has a lot to do with that. Still, it has a nice, clean turn-in and good lateral grip for an SUV. The new RX is just a little longer than the old model, and stands 2.6 inches wider, so there is a noticeable gain in agility.

We expect Lexus vehicles to be exceptionally quiet, and the new RX is no exception. That said, the 19-inch wheels on the Sport Package do allow for more road input, and a little more noise and vibration seep through. The suspension is tuned slightly differently with the Sport Package, but the end result is still not as aggressive as Porsche’s Cayenne or the BMW X5. To us, that’s fine. We think SUVs are better at grocery-getting than corner-carving anyway. Bigger wheels, thinner tires and tighter damping tend to compromise Lexus ride quality and noise control, without delivering all that much gain. So our preference is for the 18-inch wheels.

Regardless of the tire choice, we found it easy to maintain a conversation using a low tone of voice at normal speeds. Lexus pioneered the science of quietness in a car, with the result that almost all cars are significantly quieter than they were five years ago. New tricks, such as optimized wheelwell damping coatings and fender liners, have been incorporated into the new RX. The underbody of the car has also received attention against wind noise. And the addition of a sixth gear in the transmission has allowed for quieter cruising, with less engine noise, on the highway.

All those things also hold true for the RX 450h, but because it is a hybrid, it regularly operates with the engine off altogether. During those times, noise reduction is even greater, bordering on eerie.

The brakes feel strong and progressive, with just a little squish at the top of the pedal before stronger grip kicks in. The hybrid brakes, which are regenerative, are now much more smoothly modulated than early hybrid brakes. The transition between light braking, when the generator reclaims power, and the serious stopping power that comes on when more pedal is applied, can still be felt, but you have to look for it.

Steering effort is light, but seems better proportioned than past electric steer-by-wire systems we’ve tested. It’s more accurate than before, especially at the center. The new power-assist logic is based on vehicle speed. The slower you go, the less effort required, so it can be just as appropriate in the parking lot as in the fast lane on the way to Las Vegas. Lexus uses the electric steering system on a number of its vehicles, because it reduces drag on the motor and thus, improves fuel economy. It’s also more compact, so there are packaging advantages, and once you have a computer controlling steering, you can add VDIM.

VDIM is not a system easily tested in normal driving, because it requires driving out of control, and then recovering. At which point, nothing will have happened, except maybe a brief flash of an icon on the dash. But it’s a system that looks at steering, braking, throttle and motion sensors in the cabin to predict what will actually happen, compared to what the driver is asking for. If there is any difference between the two, the system intervenes and selectively brakes individual wheels to correct the path of the car. It happens so fast you might not notice.

We’ve tested VDIM on race tracks and lonely dirt roads. It works without slowing down the car much, unlike VSC, which is the standard traction/stability control system. It’s an expensive option, but one we wish was on every car.

The RX is an easy SUV to see out of, and fairly easy to keep track of the area around the vehicle when backing up or parking. Driver visibility is enhanced by small windows in the A-pillar, and by small TV cameras that track the rear and passenger-side of the RX. One camera is located in the right side mirror, the other in the rear bumper. We found we could toggle between the two views, front and side, to see how close we were to the curb or pedestrians.

We found the RX to be a relaxed and comfortable ride, so we spent time trying out some of the new electronics systems.

We actuated the heads up display and found it makes it easy to stick to speed limits in unfamiliar ground. Bright white, high-contrast figures were easy to read, even heading into sunlight. It’s the best we’ve seen so far. It’s possible to project the display anywhere on the windshield; we liked it best low and to the left.

Voice recognition, something we’ve never really trusted, still takes a little getting used to, but the new system is much closer to something we might use every day. We began by asking it to switch to channel 143 on XM, which it had no problem doing. It also seemed to quickly be able to supply the nearest gas stations, although not the cheapest prices, and turn down the air conditioning. However, when we asked it to play Grateful Dead, it did not find the channel on its own, so evidently there are limits to Hal’s intelligence.

The RX 450h is offered in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, but the all-wheel-drive system is different; it incorporates a separate rear electric motor to power the rear wheels. Because it is a hybrid, the transmission is a continuously variable automatic and the brakes are different due to the need to regenerate electricity. And there are a few packaging and styling differences to consider when making a decision between the two. Because of the addition of electric motors, the RX 450h has 20 more horsepower than the RX 350, which compensate for a weight penalty of about 300 pounds.

From a purely economic point of view, the hybrid becomes attractive if you believe the cost of fuel will again rise sharply. The hybrid RX gets about 7 mpg better fuel economy, so it goes 134 miles farther on a tank of gas. That translates into a savings of $12.80 per tank if gas stays at $2 per gallon, or $25 per fill-up if gas goes back up to $4 per gallon. If the premium for the hybrid system is $4000, you would have to drive 83,700 miles before the cost is amortized. Over 100,000 miles, you would burn almost 1200 gallons less gas, but save only $786.

In short, dollar savings would be modest, even if prices rise. For that reason, most current hybrid buyers chose the vehicle because they want to drive the most fuel-efficient, cleanest SUV possible, one that reduces dependency on imported oil. The new RX450h takes that reasoning further, delivering up to 12 percent better fuel economy and 27 more system horsepower than the current-generation RX 400h hybrid. Total emissions are approximately the same as the current RX400h, even though the 450h has a bigger engine and more power. Which is to say extremely low.

The RX 450h we drove averaged 23.4 mpg over 120 miles of mostly around-town driving.

The hybrid brake system uses the same ventilated four-wheel discs in the RX 350, but has an electronically controlled regenerative brake feature that charges the batteries when the brakes are applied gently. The hybrid system includes ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist and more important, Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM) as standard equipment. We’ve tested VDIM on controlled proving-grounds settings, and consider it a remarkable safety system. It’s also available on the RX 350 as an option.

The hybrid can drive in three modes: Normal, Eco for best mileage, and EV Mode which allows the vehicle to operate on battery only. Lexus tech sources estimate the EV-only mode operating distance at about a mile. The EV feature is aimed at allowing the RX to be used as an electric car in closed urban areas where internal combustion engines are banned altogether, such as in Europe.

It’s quieter, safer, and more driver-friendly. And in our opinion, better looking as well. If you like the current RX 330, you’ll love the Lexus RX 350. It’s a good choice for people who don’t tow much or need to move more than five at time. The RX 450h offers a clear step forward in hybrid technology.

You may have heard that Massachusetts is rapidly becoming the home of Hollywood East…lately there’s hardly a time that movie crews aren’t scouting the towns and cities of our fair state for movie shoot locations. In fact, one day recently Herb Chambers Lexus received a call from a “big time movie location scout” who was looking to shoot a movie scene in “the finest automobile showroom in the world”!

Guess what? They chose our spectacular new Herb Chambers Lexus showroom on the famous “Automile” in Sharon, MA! When this facility was finished I knew it was a bit “over the top” as they say…but nothing was too good for our loyal Lexus customers and guests– the true fans of this magnificent luxury vehicle brand. To get back to my story, it turned out that they wanted to shoot a few scenes for the upcoming 2010 movie: The Zookeeper starring Kevin James (the star of King of Queens & Paul Blart: Mall Cop) in our new showroom! Well, what could I say but “yes, when would you like to start?”

No sooner did I give them the “green light” but it seems all of Hollywood arrived! Set guys, lighting guys, camera crews, loads of “assistants”, tractor trailers trucks, miles of cable, electricians, carpenters and more …it was truly transformational… and transform they did! You see this movie plot called for several scenes in a truly ultra high-end exotic vehicle showroom, (This place even had a bar!) the ultimate “Auto Toy Store” if you will. Sprinkled among the set, were several carefully positioned rare and classic cars…Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, a McLaren, Bentley’s, Maybach, a Porsche or two… and more. A car guy’s heaven!

The shooting and festivities went on for a few days…our Herb Chambers Lexus General Manager, Giovanni Tosti, and yours-truly even managed to be “extras” in a scene or two! I can only hope that we both don’t end up “edited” on the cutting room floor… no matter, we’ll look forward to seeing this hit when The Zookeeper premiers next year! And remember, at Herb Chambers… when it comes to your dream vehicle… We’ve Got It!
